A brighter future
Sanctuary Uganda was founded 2019 by young members of the Jewish community, to be a haven for the lost children of Umbale. Over the past decade HIV, Malaria and a host of other issues have left a surge of orphaned children in a country that does not have the infrastructure to support them. The streets of the city can be a dangerous place for a child where disease, hunger and predators are commonplace. Within the walls of the Haven, the children are given food, healthcare, education and a family that will keep them safe and help them grow. Sanctuary Uganda is a Registered CBO with goals of becoming a NGO in the future.
Mission. The mission of SUF is to improve the quality of life of vulnerable children in Eastern Uganda by providing sustainable homes with a family environment and access to education.
Vision. The vision of SUF is for all children to reach their full potential and lead healthy, meaningful lives in their local communities and promote Judaism.
Sanctuary Today
Currently Sanctuary is doing amazing work, operating out of the home of one of the volunteers and supporting the children with their own funds. In this home they are provided with a family structure, and the love and support that so many of us take for granted. Coming from the streets of Mbale, Sanctuary is a bright spot in these children’s life, and one of the few chances they have for a meaningful, productive life.
While the the founders and volunteers of Sanctuary are doing incredible work, the situation is far from ideal. On their limited budget they are only able to provide two meals a day for the children, and the house is only a single bedroom. There is no public education or healthcare in Uganda so tuition is still out of reach, and medical expenses can pile up.
Today we need your help in supporting this amazing mission by sponsoring meals, education, and healthcare for the children in their care. A small monthly donation can help keep these children fed, educated and safe!
Sanctuary Tomorrow
The short-term dream of Sanctuary Uganda is to move the 8 children and volunteer mother to a 5 bedroom environment where the organization can provide a more stable and comfortable home. 2 bedrooms would be used for the children, 1 bedroom for the volunteer mother a small office and a bedroom for other volunteers. Healthcare, education, food and clothing would all be provided by Sanctuary.
The Future
In the long term, Sanctuary looks to expand beyond a single home and create a village with multiple homes that can serve as safe havens for dozens of young boys and girls. Each house would be staffed with a house mother or family, and activities and job training will give the children the skills they need to thrive in the future. Sections of the village will be devoted to farmland and grazing allowing the village to be self-sustaining, and a synagogue would be built for Jewish education and worship.
